Know Better:

Birger Hartmann

Today we meet Birger Hartmann, CEO at Agrinavia

Let's get to know each other!
Q: How did you and your company first get involved with DFA?
A: Since the mid-1990s, Agrinavia has been focused on offering its products to Danish farmers operating abroad. It was therefore a natural step to follow the work of DFA, as they represent the interests of Danish farmers working internationally in the agricultural industry. As a result, Agrinavia became an active member of DFA.

Q: What part of the DFA activities have you participated in, and how has it impacted your career?
A: Agrinavia regularly takes part in DFA’s annual conferences, member meetings, and occasionally in workshops and webinars. These events provide valuable insights into the challenges of running an agricultural business abroad and offer the chance to connect with like-minded individuals and companies involved in international farming.

Q: Can you share a pivotal moment in your professional journey that was influenced by your participation in a DFA activity?
A: The annual winter conference has consistently been a key opportunity for networking and setting up potential future meetings and visits. Especially during Agrinavia’s early years, it helped us build a solid understanding of the differences between farming in Denmark and farming abroad.
Our first visits to Danish-owned farms overseas were particularly insightful, giving us practical knowledge about various challenges farmers face – from climate variations to managing staff and building professional relationships.

Q: What was your main challenge in 2024?
A: Our main challenge was to provide solutions that enable seamless data exchange between Agrinavia's software, IT systems, and the agricultural machinery used on farms.

Q: How do you envision the future of agriculture and what role do you see DFA playing?
A: Food production will continue to be of vital importance, especially in terms of maintaining a high level of self-sufficiency. Danish Farmers Abroad can play a key role in this by sharing knowledge and offering guidance to help members increase efficiency while also meeting the demands and expectations of society. This includes promoting environmentally sustainable farming, prioritizing health, and ensuring fair working conditions and rights for employees.

Q: Outside of work, what's a passion or hobby that not many people know about?
A: I enjoy cycling—both road biking and mountain biking.

Q: If you could recommend a holiday destination to fellow members what would that be?
A: Northern Italy, specifically the Antrona Valley near the Swiss border. This region offers a wonderful climate, stunning hiking routes, and charming mountain villages that are completely free of roads and car traffic.

Thank you, Birger, for sharing your insights and experiences with us!
